We are back with our weekly updates from our in house agony aunt ‘Aunty Fabulous’ and hear some of the questions she has been asked, it was a great to hear how, ‘Aunty Fabulous’ tackled these obstacles.

Dear Agony Aunt,

I would like to further my studying. I have been working now for five years as a beauty therapist but I would like to go back and study law. My only obstacle is how will I be able to keep paying my rent as I live in Camden and it is very expensive.

I am scared to tell my parents as they have done so much for me, but this is something I really want to do.

Aunty Fabulous Answer

Wanting to go back and study law sounds like an exciting challenge. Having the qualification to be a beauty therapist is something you will always be able to fall back on if need be. It’s wonderful to have this skill.

There are various options. The first is to take that leap of faith and talk to your parents! If they have done so much for you in past then they may want to help you fulfill your passion to study law.

If you need help to pay for this and they are unable to help then you may consider government funding. Here’s a link for adult learners grants. I suggest you speak to them and see what they can offer or they may point you in the right direction.

Depending on your study schedule you may also be able to work as a beauty therapist on the weekends or a few evenings a week to help pay your rent and bills.

Your parents may also suggest you move back in with them if possible.

Things to consider:

  • Do your parents have the space for you to live with them?
  • Will the dynamics of living with them again work?
  • Do you want to keep your independence and live in your own place?

You don’t mention if you have a flat mate but if you don’t and you have an extra room perhaps you could get someone else to share the costs. Alternatively you may consider moving to a less expensive area.

If you want to make this happen you can do it! Good luck, stay positive and keep following your dreams.
